Panelist: Preserving the HBCU Tennis Legacy
William J. Crutchfield is the Head Men’s and Women’s Tennis Coach at North Carolina A&T State University. Crutchfield describes his coaching style and overall approach to the physical, technical and psychological aspects of tennis as something that helps progress players on the courts and in the classroom. Crutchfield has more than 40 years of tennis coaching experience after he started coaching in the National Junior Tennis League in Washington, D.C., at age 17. His goal is for his players to play with clean techniques, tactical clarity and a fighting edge. Crutchfield has coached USTA Division I collegiate tennis athletes as well as professional tour players.
His coaching experience includes over 30 years of lifetime youth related service in teaching, mentoring, and curriculum development. He is a former collegiate player, a former high school coach and a former private instructor who has earned an impeccable reputation nationally. Crutchfield is a highly sought after speaker and the author of the book entitled One Shot Tennis-Volume One - Set Point: The System of Conscious Prep for Subconscious Play. Jonah Kriek, former No. 7 in the world and a two-time Australian Open Singles champion called Crutchfield’s book a fantastic explanation of the process of how to play the game from a man with years of experience in working with young minds. Tim Wilkison, an ATP tour player for more than 25 years said Crutchfield inspires him to be a better coach. Larry J. Strickland, legendary Howard University coach, called Crutchfield’s instruction on tennis development a must read.
Crutchfield, a longtime staple of the Charlotte area community, also received praise from Cid Carvalho, legendary Winthrop University coach who won 22 conference titles, and Calvin Davis, who won 31 high school championships as a coach.
